The Challenge: A Critical Need for Support
The statistics are staggering: every hour, two vulnerable children enter the foster care system. Many of these children face immense instability and lack the consistent support and learning opportunities they need to thrive. Children in care often experience some of the lowest educational outcomes in the country.
The Pyjama Foundation exists to bridge this gap. Their simple but powerful goal is to break the cycle of disadvantage through literacy, numeracy, and life-changing mentorship.
The Solution: The 'Love of Learning' Program
The heart of The Pyjama Foundation's work is its 'Love of Learning' program. This initiative connects dedicated volunteer mentors, known as ‘Pyjama Angels,’ with a child in care. These volunteers visit the same child each week to read books, play educational games, and build essential life skills.
But it's about more than just academics. The program provides these children with:

Since 2016, through initiatives driven by our dedicated staff and collaborative fundraising efforts, Direct Connect has proudly raised $86,560 for The Pyjama Foundation.
A standout moment in our continued support is our annual PJ Day, where the Direct Connect team unites to raise vital funds and awareness. We’ve also amplified our impact through a Christmas donation matching initiative, matching every dollar donated to the foundation up to the value of $10,000. This ensures every dollar contributed goes further when generosity is needed most.
The Tangible Impact of Our Partnership
Together, we have made a measurable difference. In the past year, our collective support has helped The Pyjama Foundation to:
+ Benefit 1,744 children through their life-changing mentorship programs.
+ Train 1,309 new Pyjama Angels to support children waiting for a mentor.
+ Provide 1,692 hours of support to existing Pyjama Angels.
+ Deliver 94,248 hours of mentoring to children and young people in care.
+ Read approximately 38,363 books with children, helping them develop literacy and confidence.
But we know there is always more to be done. With 850 children still on the waitlist for a Pyjama Angel, the need for mentors and support is greater than ever.
