Shower Floor Grime Begone!
Shower Floor Grime Begone!
Easy cleaning hacks to get rid of that nasty shower grime and keep your shower sparkling!
Your bathroom, meant for keeping you clean, can feel a bit ironic when it's the one place in your home that's anything but spotless. As showers get wet, it’s easy for mould and mildew to form, which could mean all kinds of germs running rampant. Not only that, but the build-up of dirt and grime can look unsightly on walls, screens and floors of the shower.
Fortunately, the chances of getting ill are very low due to only 1-2% of germs in and around the shower being pathogenic. However, nobody likes the thought of being surrounded by bacteria as they take a shower to wash and clean themselves.
Good ventilation and a weekly scrub-down is all it takes to ensure the shower stays clean and dry. Here are some of the best ways to clean a shower, using either natural or chemical cleaning products. Most of all, these techniques are easy to carry out so they won’t take up too much time.
How to clean a textured fibreglass or a plastic shower floor using baking soda
Baking Soda For Cleaning
Baking soda is an excellent natural cleaning product that can blast any dirt and bacteria on a shower floor. Bicarbonate of soda is a mild alkali with abrasive properties that help to remove dirt, grime, and soap scum from the shower floor with ease. Its deodorising properties also help to eradicate any unpleasant odours. The boiling water can also kill bacteria and germs, making it a great natural disinfectant.
Here’s how to do it:
Start by rinsing the floor with warm water and then covering the entire shower floor with baking soda
Cover the shower floor with old towels that are specifically used for cleaning purposes
Boil a kettle. Then, pour the boiling water all over the old towels until they are completely soaked
Warning: The water will be extremely hot, so use gloves when carrying out this task and be extra careful not to let any water splash onto bare skin.
Let the wet towels stay until they have cooled down. Once this has happened, start scrubbing the floor using the towels. Any stubborn spots on the shower floor can be cleaned with a brush or sponge
This method is an excellent natural, chemical-free way of cleaning grout from tiles without using harsh chemicals that can harm the environment or irritate your skin. How to clean a textured fibreglass or a plastic shower floor using white vinegar & dishwashing liquid
White vinegar and dishwashing liquid form the perfect partnership when it comes to tackling shower floor scum. White vinegar is a natural acid, meaning it can dissolve mineral deposits, soap scum, and other types of dirt and grime that accumulate. Vinegar also has anti-bacterial properties, making it the ideal adversary to germs, and an excellent natural alternative to harsh chemical cleaners.
Here’s how to clean grout using vinegar and dishwashing liquid:
Mix two cups of vinegar and two tablespoons of dishwashing soap
Heat it up in the microwave for two minutes
Use a plastic spray bottle and put the solution into the bottle
Spray the bathroom floor completely and let it sit for at least 30 minutes
Take a brush or sponge and start scrubbing the tougher stains
How to clean a fibreglass shower floor using traditional cleaning products
Traditional chemical-based cleaning products are much harsher than natural cleaning products, but they do tend to deliver better results. Using bleach is a popular method and involves mixing equal parts of chlorine bleach and water in a spray bottle, and spraying all shower surfaces before scrubbing away with a soft cloth. Any remaining stubborn stains will require extra scrubbing. Using an old toothbrush can work for this.
Getting the shower spick and span takes less than 30 minutes
The shower is one of the filthiest places in a bathroom, as all dirt from the body gets washed away here. To keep the shower floor sparkling, get into the habit of cleaning it once a week – 30 minutes is all it takes to ensure the bathroom is sparkling and always in pristine condition for house guests and family members.
As always, with any cleaning that is being done in the home, run a test patch on a small, inconspicuous area before applying the cleaning solution on the whole floor.
